Do you write resolutions or goals or intentions in the beginning of a new year?
I do. I love it! I write goals and intentions throughout the year too.
This year we’re writing them down as a family activity, just for fun. We are writing goals for 2010 as well as this next decade. I like setting goals for myself and I am really excited to envision and plan for the next decade.
A part of the plan will have to consider the stages of my kids along the way. In ten years, I will have two adolescents (15 and 12 yrs old!). This realization at once brings uncertainty and direction to the plans.
It reminds me that my parenting needs to keep the long-range vision. In addition to addressing the crisis du jour, I also need to guide my kids’ development into becoming resilient, thoughtful, compassionate, generous, and resourceful adolescents and adults.
This wholistic vision of parenting is among the top of my New Decade’s Resolutions. I will be asking myself, ”Are my actions, choices, reactions, and guidance serving my children well today AND 10 years from now AND 20 years from now?”

- Increase our family vacations by 100%.
- I will work harder than ever and create exceptional parenting courses for you and other fellow parents working hard to become better parents.
Whew. I am exhausted just reading her list. But it is inspiring nonetheless. I am afraid to write much down this new year, honestly. For fear that I won’t “achieve” it or will set my sights too high. This year I am trying to keep it very simple. My MAIN two are:
1. MOVEMENT
-in all forms. More working out, more walking, more dancing with my little girl, more yoga, etc. I am happier, and then everyone in the family is happier when I have movement. MORE OF IT, yes!
1. MUSIC
more singing, more working with instruments, more learning songs to sing with Una, more singing with my husband, more singing in the car, period. More music.
Interested to hear from others on this one!
Those sound like great goals for 2010, Anna. It’s bound to be a fun year ahead with all of that music and movement. Thanks for sharing.
Movement is also one of my resolutions, but I was reluctant to share it publicly. But, here goes – my intention is to exercise everyday this year. It sounds extreme, but I have a very workable plan that is not about extreme, just about creating a new habit. I was going to share it in my short list here, but then my husband deemed it unreasonable. For fear of others chiming in with similar dissuasion, I removed it. All support and encouragement welcome, though.
My husband and I have written down intentions for the new year for many years, but this is the first year we did it as a family, with our 5 year old as the primary scribe (and the baby chewing on a marker). We drew our individual goals, and talked about what we would like to do more of as a family, and how we can support each other in our various ideas. It was not as specific and “planned” as I have approached it in years past but it was a lot more fun! I was surprised at how much my 5 year old had to say about it all. And I loved our simple drawings of things that we are wanting to incorporate more of.
So our main conclusions are – more family camping and outdoor adventures together, our son wants to have friends over to play more often, my hubby is focusing on balancing his work and home/non-work balance (anyone who knows Banks knows all about his struggle with that!), we are going to work together to do some home organizing and streamlining.
For me – finding my regular yoga practice again and really truly slowing down to enjoy the happiness in our every day routines are my primary intentions.
I love the new year when all things seem/feel attainable!
